What happens during the eye test

  1. A few questionsWhat you have trouble seeing, your work, and your current glasses if you wear any.
  2. Computerized readingYou look into the machine and it measures a starting number for each eye in a few seconds.
  3. Reading the eye test chartYou read letters through trial lenses for distance and for near, so the number is set to what is comfortable for you.
  4. Measuring the distance between your eyes (PD)This is needed so the lens centres sit in front of your pupils.
  5. Your number and adviceYou get your number and a recommendation for lens type and frame.

Why a proper eye test matters

Glasses made to a wrong or old number cause headaches and tired eyes. A computerized reading is fast, but it is only a starting point. The number is always confirmed with trial lenses while you read the chart, because comfort differs from person to person.

Uncorrected refractive error is one of the leading causes of vision impairment worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, and it is corrected with a simple pair of glasses.

After your test

Choose a frame, then a lens type. If you spend hours on a screen or drive at night, compare blue cut, anti-glare and photochromic lenses. You can also start an order online and finish it at the shop.

What an eye test finds: the four refractive errors

A glasses number exists because the eye does not focus light exactly on the retina. There are four types, and one person can have more than one.

Myopia in children

Myopia usually starts between ages 6 and 14 and increases while the child grows. Children who spend more time outdoors develop it less often, and long hours of close screen use make it more likely. A child's number should be checked every year, because an under-corrected child struggles at school without knowing why. See frames for children.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is one of the most searched eye terms in Pakistan, and it is widely misunderstood. It is not a disease. The front surface of the eye is shaped slightly like the back of a spoon instead of a ball, so light focuses unevenly. Almost everyone has a little. It is corrected fully with glasses, and the axis must be measured carefully, which is why the number is always confirmed with trial lenses. Read how to read your prescription.

How to prepare for your eye test

  • Bring your current glasses and any old prescription.
  • If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses too and tell us when you last wore the lenses.
  • Come rested. Very tired eyes can give a slightly different reading.
  • Tell us about diabetes, blood pressure and any eye drops you use.
  • For a child, mention any squint, head tilt or problems reported by the teacher.

Who needs more than a glasses test

A glasses test does not look for eye disease. See an eye specialist once a year if you have diabetes, because diabetes damages the retina silently. Everyone over 40 should have eye pressure checked for glaucoma, and anyone with a family history of glaucoma should start earlier. Cloudy vision in older people is often cataract, which is treated with a short operation. We will tell you if your test suggests you should see a specialist.

Screens and tired eyes

Burning, dry, tired eyes after hours on a phone come mostly from blinking less. Follow the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Keep the screen slightly below eye level and at arm's length. If you are considering special lenses, read blue cut vs anti-glare vs photochromic.
