Amsler grid test online
The Amsler grid checks the very centre of your vision. It takes one minute per eye.
Amsler grid test
Wear your reading glasses. Hold the screen 30 cm away, cover one eye and stare at the centre dot. Without moving your eye, notice the lines around it.
Tick any change you notice. Leave all boxes empty if the grid looks normal, then tick and untick any box to see your result.
How to use it
- Put on your reading glasses and sit in good light.
- Hold the grid at reading distance and cover one eye.
- Keep looking at the centre dot.
- Tick anything that looks wavy, missing or blurred, then test the other eye.

What the Amsler grid checks
The macula is the centre of the retina, used for reading and recognising faces. Diabetes and age-related macular degeneration can damage it. Early damage makes straight lines look wavy before vision drops, so a weekly grid check can catch a change early.
Who should use it
- People over 50
- People with diabetes or high blood pressure
- Anyone told they have macular changes
If the grid looks abnormal
See an eye specialist within a few days, and the same day if the change is sudden. Glasses cannot fix a macular problem, so do not wait for an optical appointment.
Questions
How often should I check the Amsler grid?
Once a week if you are over 50 or have diabetes, one eye at a time.
Does a normal grid mean my eyes are healthy?
It only checks central vision. Glaucoma, for example, affects side vision first and gives a normal grid.
Can glasses fix wavy lines?
No. Wavy lines suggest a retinal problem that needs an eye specialist.
