In detail

Kharish ka ilaj (itching)

Itching has many causes: dry skin, scabies, fungal infection, allergy, or liver and kidney problems. Scabies itches most at night and spreads through a family, so everyone in the house must be treated together and bedding washed in hot water. Fungal itching forms a ring with a clear centre. Because the treatment differs, the doctor needs to see the skin.

Eczema

Eczema is dry, itchy, red skin that comes and goes, often in the elbow and knee folds. Moisturising twice a day is the base of all treatment. Use mild soap, cotton clothes and lukewarm water. Scratching breaks the skin and lets infection in.

Chambal (psoriasis)

Psoriasis causes thick, silvery, well-defined patches on the elbows, knees and scalp. It is not contagious. It flares with stress, infection and winter. It is a long-term condition that is controlled, not removed for good, so be wary of anyone promising a permanent cure.

Keel muhase aur daagh (acne and marks)

Acne comes from oil glands and hormones, mainly in teenagers and young adults. Wash twice daily with a gentle cleanser, do not squeeze, and avoid fairness creams, many of which contain steroids or mercury and make acne worse. Dark marks fade over months once new pimples stop.

Skin allergy aur chhapaki (urticaria)

Hives are raised, itchy weals that move around the body and fade within a day. Common triggers are a food, a medicine, an insect bite or an infection. Hives with swelling of the lips or tongue or breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Baalon ka girna (hair fall)

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Heavier loss follows illness, childbirth, crash diets and stress, and often recovers in six months. Low iron, thyroid disease and PCOS are common hidden causes, so a blood test is worth doing before spending on oils and tonics.

General advice in line with NHS: atopic eczema.

Go to a hospital first if you have

  • A rash with swelling of the lips, face or throat, or trouble breathing
  • A fast-spreading rash with fever
  • Skin that is hot, red, painful and getting worse

These signs need urgent examination and tests. Go to the nearest hospital or call Rescue 1122.

Questions about skin, allergy and hair

Can I keep using my skin creams?

Tell the doctor what you are using. Do not stop a medicine prescribed by a skin specialist without asking that specialist.

How long before I see a change?

It depends on the condition and how long you have had it. The doctor will give you an honest estimate after seeing the skin.

Kharish ka ilaj kya hai?

It depends on the cause. Scabies, fungus, dry skin and allergy are treated differently, so have the skin examined first.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. It cannot be caught from another person.

Are you drinking enough water?

Dry skin itches more, and dehydration makes it worse. Work out a daily water amount for your weight.
