In detail

Khansi ka ilaj (cough)

A cough after a cold can last two to three weeks. Warm fluids, honey for anyone over one year old, and steam help. A cough lasting more than three weeks, or with blood, weight loss, night sweats or evening fever, must be tested for tuberculosis, which is common in Pakistan and fully treatable with free medicine from government centres.

Khushk khansi (dry cough)

A dry, tickly cough with no phlegm often follows a viral infection or comes from allergy, acidity or dust. Some blood pressure medicines also cause it. Sip warm water, avoid cold drinks and smoke, and tell the doctor about your medicines.

Nazla zukam aur chheenkein (allergic rhinitis)

Sneezing fits in the morning, a runny or blocked nose and itchy eyes point to allergy. Triggers include dust, pollen, wheat harvest dust and animal hair. Washing the face after coming indoors and keeping bedding dust-free reduce attacks.

Dama (asthma)

Asthma causes wheeze, chest tightness and breathlessness, often at night or with exertion. Inhalers are the main treatment and are safe for long-term use. Never stop a preventer inhaler because you feel well. An attack that does not ease with the reliever inhaler is an emergency.

Sinus (sinusitis)

Blocked sinuses cause pain and pressure over the cheeks and forehead, a heavy head and thick discharge. Steam and saline rinses help. See ear, nose and throat for more.
