Is homeopathic medicine safe?

Patients often ask this before their first visit. Here is a straight answer, including what homeopathy should not be used for.
What homeopathic medicine is
Homeopathic medicines are prepared from plant, mineral and other natural sources by repeated dilution. They are usually given as small sweet pills (globules) or drops. In Pakistan, homeopathy is a recognised system of medicine. Practitioners qualify with the DHMS diploma and register with the National Council for Homoeopathy.
How safe is it?
Properly prepared, highly diluted homeopathic medicines contain very little active substance, so side effects are uncommon. Three points need care:
- Low dilutions and mixtures. Some products sold as homeopathic contain measurable amounts of active ingredients and can interact with other medicines.
- Alcohol. Liquid drops are often alcohol-based. Tell the doctor if this matters to you or if the medicine is for a child.
- Delay. The real danger is using homeopathy in place of treatment you need. Infections, heart disease, diabetes, asthma attacks, cancer and emergencies need a hospital.
What does the evidence say?
You should know that scientific reviews, including those summarised by the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, have not found reliable evidence that homeopathy works for specific diseases. Many patients nonetheless report feeling better under homeopathic care, and it remains widely used in Pakistan. We believe patients should hear both facts and decide for themselves.
How to use homeopathy responsibly
- Consult a registered homeopathic doctor, not a shop counter.
- Tell the doctor about every illness you have and every medicine you take.
- Do not stop insulin, blood pressure, heart, asthma or epilepsy medicines.
- Keep children's vaccinations on schedule.
- If you are not improving, or a warning sign appears, go to a hospital.

Can children take homeopathic medicine?
Children are seen at the clinic. A baby under three months with fever must go to a hospital first.
Can I take it with my allopathic medicine?
Tell both doctors what you are taking. Do not stop prescribed medicine without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
How do I know a homeopath is qualified?
