UV400: the number that matters
UV400 means the lens blocks ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometres, which covers both UVA and UVB. Years of UV exposure are linked to cataract and to growths on the white of the eye (naakhuna, or pterygium), which is common in people who work outdoors. A dark lens without UV protection is worse than no sunglasses, because the pupil opens wider behind it and lets more UV in.

A tint only makes everything darker. A polarized lens also blocks the horizontal glare that bounces off a wet road, a car bonnet or water. Drivers and riders notice the difference at once. Polarized lenses can make some phone and petrol-pump screens hard to read at certain angles.
