How to choose glasses frames

A frame has three jobs: hold your lenses in the right place, sit comfortably all day, and suit your face. Start with fit, then think about style.

  • Width. The frame should be about as wide as your face. Your eyes should sit near the centre of each lens.
  • Bridge. It should rest on the nose without slipping or leaving deep marks.
  • Arms. They should reach your ears without pressing.
  • Your number. A high number looks and feels better in a smaller, full-rim frame, because the lens edges are thinner.
  • Material. Metal is thin and light. Acetate (plastic) is bold and comes in more colours. Rimless is the lightest.

What the numbers inside a frame mean

Look inside the arm of any frame and you will see three numbers, such as 52 □ 18 140.

  • 52 is the lens width in millimetres.
  • 18 is the bridge width, the gap over your nose.
  • 140 is the arm length.

If your current frame fits well, a new frame with similar numbers will fit too. Send us these numbers on WhatsApp when you order online.

Nose pads, hinges and comfort

Metal frames have adjustable nose pads, which suit people with a low nose bridge. Acetate frames rest directly on the nose and cannot be adjusted as much. Spring hinges let the arms flex outward and last longer in daily use. Whatever you choose, we adjust the frame on your face at collection, and you can come back any time for a free re-adjustment.

Frames for a high number

With a number above about ±4.00, pick a smaller, rounder, full-rim frame in acetate. A small lens is thinner at the edge, and the rim hides what thickness remains. Combine it with high-index thin lenses.
