How the estimate is made
About 33 ml per kilogram of body weight covers a resting adult. The calculator adds roughly 350 ml for each 30 minutes of exercise and 500 ml for hot weather. Tea, lassi, soup and fruit count towards the total.
Signs you are not drinking enough
- Dark yellow urine
- Headache and tiredness
- Hard stools
- Dizziness on standing
Why it matters
Low water intake is the main cause of kidney stones in our climate, and a common cause of constipation. People who have had a stone should drink enough to pass pale urine all day.
Questions
How many glasses of water a day?
Eight to ten glasses of 250 ml suit most adults, more in summer.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes, but it is rare. Several litres in a short time can be dangerous.
Does tea count?
