Sugar level chart
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fasting | Below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) | 100 to 125 (5.6 to 6.9) | 126 or above (7.0) |
| 2 hours after 75 g glucose | Below 140 (7.8) | 140 to 199 (7.8 to 11.0) | 200 or above (11.1) |
| HbA1c | Below 5.7% | 5.7 to 6.4% | 6.5% or above |
These are the American Diabetes Association diagnostic values. To convert, divide mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L.
Diabetes and your eyes
Diabetes damages the small blood vessels of the retina without any early symptoms. Everyone with diabetes needs a retina check by an eye specialist once a year. A glasses test does not look for this. Changing sugar levels also make your glasses number swing, so have your number checked when your sugar is stable.
Diabetic patients must continue their prescribed medicine. Read our medical disclaimer.
