What is astigmatism?
In astigmatism the front of the eye is curved more in one direction than the other, like the back of a spoon. Light focuses unevenly, so vision is slightly blurred or shadowed at all distances and lights at night look stretched. It is very common and is not a disease.
How it appears on a prescription
Astigmatism is the CYL (cylinder) value with an axis from 0 to 180. Read how to read your eye prescription. It is corrected with ordinary glasses or toric contact lenses.
Limits of the dial test
The dial can miss small amounts of astigmatism and cannot measure it. If lines look uneven, or you squint and get headaches, book a free computerized eye test.
Questions
Can astigmatism be cured?
Glasses and toric contact lenses correct it fully while you wear them. Laser surgery can reduce it permanently in suitable adults.
Is astigmatism serious?
No. It is a focusing error, not a disease. A sudden increase should be checked by an eye specialist.
Does astigmatism get worse with age?
It usually changes slowly. Have your eyes tested every one to two years.
