About colour vision deficiency
Most people called colour blind see colours, but confuse certain reds, greens and browns. The red-green type is inherited, affects roughly 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women, and does not get worse. It matters for some jobs, such as the armed forces, railways, aviation, electrical work and some driving licences.
How the plates work
Each plate is made of dots that differ in colour but not in brightness. People with normal colour vision see the number at once. People with a red-green deficiency see only dots. The first plate is a practice plate that everyone should read.
Limits
Phone and laptop screens show colour differently, so this is a screening. A firm result needs printed plates under proper light, done by an eye specialist. For blurred vision, book a free computerized eye test.
Questions
Can colour blindness be treated?
Inherited colour vision deficiency has no cure. Tinted lenses can help some people tell colours apart but do not restore normal colour vision.
Why are more men colour blind?
The genes for red and green vision are on the X chromosome. Men have one X, so one faulty copy is enough.
Can colour vision change later in life?
Yes. Diabetes, glaucoma, cataract and some medicines can affect it. A new change needs an eye specialist.
